Puffin' The Chinese Dragon

No, not that magic dragon. It looks like America isn't the worst when it comes to their addiction to nicotene. China, which has a huge industry for tabacco, and a huge population seems to be the leader when it comes the substance of cigarettes. Read on at npr.com

1. Which media environments and technologies/applications/platforms will I use in documenting and telling the story of my China trip?
I will be bringing my flip camera for taking video and my dslr for high quality stills.
2. What equipment/gear will I need to bring to capture my stories?
I will be bringing a Flip camera and my Mac Book Pro laptop for editing, using iMovie as a simple editing program. I will also be bringing my single lens reflex camera.
2. How will I capture and "bottle" my stories while traveling in China?
I plan to get a number of images that will convey my journey abroad.
4. Please provide a "sample example" of your multimedia approach here.

Crazy Tiger Or Not So Much...

After reading Amy Chua's article a few weeks back about the "Chinese" way of raising a child, it turns out she might not be so insane after all.

Admittedly American
Before embarking on my studious journey of taking China Mojo, I have to be honest, I was not the most versed historian on the Far East - if they even call it that anymore. I knew the basics if you can even consider it
that: I had heard that China was now a communist country who has lent our country billions, I knew that their language system was entirely different from what I was familiar with, and of course that there was an ancient Great Wall.

Okay, maybe that isn’t everything, but I had never given China much thought, it had always just been the place where they had cheap labor and created basically everything from plastic toys to acrylic hats.

I have picked up what I know about china from the various courses that I’ve taken over the years, but really none of them ever touched on what China is like today. I guess I just never really thought about it, which is easy to do when they exist on the other side of the globe. There aren’t very many mainstream outlets for discovering the culture that I can think of, and I think that has shaped the fact that I don’t have as big of a focus on the juggernaut of a country that is China.

Personally, I would like to fill in the gaps in my understanding about the place. I would like to get a clearer understanding of what life is like for these people that make up such a large portion of the worlds population. One day I think it would be fascinating to actually take on the challenge of learning the language and writing system, which currently seem so foreign to me. The reason for me taking this class was to really get an understanding of how different their culture is, and to explore these differences in the eventual adventure of a lifetime.

THE FIRST STEP INTO AN ICY COLD DARKNESS
1. East Montpelier, VT
2. Deleting Facebook

3. I enjoy that people across the world are able to connect so easily, however I dislike how much time it consumes.
4. I would like to practice graphic design in a firm or freelance, and be happy.
5. What is going on currently with Google and China?
